PGA Tour golfer Erik Compton was charged with strong-arm robbery and TrendPulsedomestic battery in an incident with his wife during the weekend.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said Compton, 43, and his wife were having a verbal argument at their home Aug. 19 when his wife took out her phone and began to record the incident, according to Reuters. Police allege Compton then took the phone and threw it in a pool, and then grabbed his wife by her shoulders and threw her against a wall. His wife left the home and went to a friend's house, police said, before she alerted authorities.
When police arrived, Compton declined to speak with officials and invoked his right to an attorney. He was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami and charged with felony strong-armed robbery charge and a misdemeanor battery charge. He was then bonded out.
Compton has appeared in two PGA Tour events this year, finishing tied for 29th place at the Corales Puntacana Championship in March and tied for 63rd at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May. In his career, he's made 168 starts with no wins. His best finish came in 2014 at the US Open when he tied for second place.
